Radon Testing and Result Guidance

You cannot see, smell, or taste radon. Testing is the only way to know whether your home has elevated radon levels.

Know your number

You and your family are most likely to receive the greatest radon exposure at home. Testing is easy and inexpensive, and Pennsylvania homeowners can use a certified test device from a home center, hardware store, or certified laboratory.

If an initial test result is 4 pCi/L or higher, the EPA recommends a follow-up test and mitigation when elevated levels are confirmed.

  • Short-term tests for a quick screening
  • Longer-term tests for a broader picture of exposure
  • Review of results before planning mitigation
  • Support for real estate transaction timelines

What does 4 pCi/L mean?

The EPA action guideline is 4 pCi/L. A confirmed result at or above that level means a mitigation system is recommended to reduce radon levels.

Selling a home?

When selling a home, known radon test results should be disclosed to the buyer. Testing and mitigation can help keep a transaction moving.
